Experimental Methods in Public Administration Research

Professor Gregg G. Van Ryzin from Rutgers University -Newark gave an inspiring presentation on "The Perceived Fairness of Active Representation: Evidence from a Survey Experiment". He made an overview on experimental methods in Public Administration Field, introducing he and his colleagues' four studies that are published in PA top journals. According to his speech, the reasons why survey experiments are booming are three: limitations of observational studies, dissatisfaction with not having solid causal evidence, and yet causal evidence is essential for public management. Then, based on this research method, Professor Van Ryzin discussed that citizens' judgement on policies can depend on certain ratio of minority public employees, which proves one of major assumptions in representative bureaucracy theory.
